Hey guys! This is a story of my dying betta fish, so the fish was good when I purchased, but when I put a real plant it got poisoned and was about to die. I put medicine and saved him. But, he wasn’t the same anymore and eventually died because of real plant cause. I contacted pet shop they told me I’m not suppose to have plants in aquarium without filter and I just wonder why couldn’t they tell me that when I purchased it with the fish? Also was told for plants you need like minimum 10 gallon aquarium because they release a lot of toxic. I guess if you guys decide to keep a betta its not as easy as it seems.

From the Beginning

I go to Petco I see this double tail betta and it looked very cool, so I choose him from the other ones. Also I saw this cool plant inside a water aquarium and choose the plant too. So, now I have a betta and a water plant, and the fish worker department didn’t tell me any info about keeping bettas with plants.

When I set up the tank and added the fish and the plant, couple days later I noticed the fish got poison by the plant. I go back to the store to return the plant and purchase a treatment, another fish worker told me I wasn’t suppose to keep this two together. He said for plants you need minimum 10 gallon tank and filter and fully cycled and ready for the fish. He mentioned for bettas I should keep them just like any other fish, except just 1 betta in a tank and not more.

Anyway, I used this treatment (Tetra Lifeguard all in one treatment) and my fish was back to being normal, so I set a new tank for him and ready to go. Lesson to be learned is to not mix bettas with water plants unless their is filter and big amount of aquarium and the aquarium needs to by cycled. Cycled means their is beneficial bacteria and the water inside is in good healthy condition for the fish.

Betta needs:

  • 2.5 Gallon Tank (minimum/I think should be 5)

  • filter

  • plants

  • hide out area

  • fake plant near surface of water so it could rest on and breath

  • water conditioner

  • heater

  • thermometer

  • worms as treats

  • betta food

  • tiny rocks on the bottom of tank

also, if you keeping a betta in small tank like 2.5 gallon without filter then make sure to change the water every week. This is very important because if not changed every week fish can die from ammonia build up. Also do not overfeed the fish. For example if your feeding pellets than just feed 4 a day. You can feed two in morning and two at night. Use specific Water conditioner for bettas such as from the company Tetra.

If keeping it without a filter make sure the water has 0 ammonia to begin with. Keep in mind most tap waters have more than 0 ammonia, which is not good for the fish. do not keep it anything below 1.5 gallons of water.

Remember to keep one betta at a time, don’t put two together or mix with other fishes. thanks for watching and have Great Day!
